Safe control and restraint training

Safer control for officers and the public

Lower-injury restraint training for police, corrections and security teams. De-escalation first, built on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo.

  • Led by a Motswana black belt in BJJ and Judo
  • Aligned with UN use-of-force principles

The challenge

Physical encounters carry the highest risk

Injuries and complaints

Most start when officers go hands-on.

Risky methods

Strikes, pain and prone restraint risk serious harm, including positional asphyxia.

Little practice

Hands-on skills fade fast after the academy.

How it works

Control through position, not pain

Three steps, taught as one system.

  1. A police officer talking calmly with a man beside a car, explaining with open hands

    Step 1: Calm and contain

Talk, keep a safe distance and position the team. Most incidents end here.

  2. A police officer applying a calm standing arm control to a man beside a car

    Step 2: Control with position

If hands-on is needed, two officers use leverage and balance, not strikes or pain.

  3. A police officer kneeling to check on a man seated on a kerb

    Step 3: Secure and care

Side-lying or seated early, handcuff from control, check welfare, hand over safely.

Why not strikes? Strikes and pain injure, escalate resistance and are hard to justify. Position-based control is how a smaller person safely controls a larger, resisting one. See the comparison
